I know many of you have been waiting for a new Super Tuscan Sangiovese from us. It has been a long time since the 2013 vintage and it has taken us until now to find a way to make a new one. It has been a very frustrating process as many Sangiovese vineyards have been pulled out, and the ones that are left are not suitable for a great Sangiovese. We finally decided to go to where professionals grow great Sangiovese—Tuscany.
Erich came to be great friends with Daniele Rossi at Campochiarenti winery in San Gimignano, Italy by way of a mutual Twitter friend in the wine industry. Champochiarenti is a small, passionate Tuscan producer and his winery and vineyard have the same great standards and ethics about the land and winery as we do. The wines Danielle makes are fabulous.
After much discussion, we arranged to ship 3000 liters of Campochiarenti 2017 Chianti Classico in bulk wine containers in July 2019. Once the wine arrived, Erich blended it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot from our Live Oak reserve vineyard. After the blend was finalized, we moved it back into large 160 gallon French Oak barrels and let it age for another year. To our knowledge, this is the first of its kind- an International Super Tuscan. It is 70% Chianti Classico from Tuscany and then 30% Paso Robles from our best vineyard. We are happy to announce that the wine will be bottled at the end of August.
Instead of putting this wine in a Russell Family Vineyard or Rabbit Ridge label we decided to make it its own brand and created a new label. Daniele came up with the name Passione Divina which means divine passion. Daniele, Joanne, Erich, and our friend John Fodera, who has a newsletter -Tuscan Vines, designed the label together.
This wine is a dream come true for Erich. To be able to blend our grapes with Tuscan Chianti is a priceless opportunity. We just added the wine to our shopping cart and are selling it with a futures price discount. This wine will not be eligible for any wine club discounts so now is the time to buy it. However, we think we priced the wine extremely well for the work that went into it. The futures price will be good until September 1st. We will ship the wine as soon as the weather cools down or in an ice kit, see below.
Many have asked us about large bottles. During the futures sale, you will have the opportunity to buy magnums and double magnums of the wine. The large-format bottles will only be sold in advance as we have to order exactly the number of corks and glass for these sizes. The regular 750 ml bottles will be available ongoing but the price will go to retail around $40.
